What's the difference between white gold and platinum

HOME > Knowledge

In the field of jewelry, there are two most common types of white jewelry metals: 18K white gold and platinum. But according to the national precious metal jewelry standards, only platinum can be called platinum. The commonly referred to white gold is actually 18K white gold, which has a significant difference from platinum.

Difference 1: Different markings

18K white gold is marked as Au or G, and common markings include 18K, 750, Au750, G750, etc. White K gold is impure gold. It is composed of a mixture of 75% gold and 25% other different metals.

Platinum is marked as Pt, and common purity markers include Pt850, Pt900, Pt950, Pt990, Pt999, etc. An alloy primarily composed of platinum (Pt), another precious metal.

Difference 2: Different degrees of softness and hardness

All platinum has a hardness less than 18K gold.

The essence of platinum is platinum, which is a rare metal with a soft texture. Because platinum has a very soft texture, other alloys need to be added to platinum jewelry to adjust its hardness. But compared to 18K white gold with a higher content of other metals added, platinum still has a softer hardness.

Difference 3: Different colors

The natural color of 18K white gold is a very light yellow, and the reason why it appears white is due to the electroplating process. 18K white gold will fade with increasing wearing time.

Platinum itself is white and never fades.
